World Series and Thursday Night ACC Rumble
Everytime I’ve picked on baseball in a game involving the Sox, it has ended in disaster, so I’ll be tuning primarily into college football tonight. I will try looking into the under again, this time at 10–I’m not sold on Jimenez, but other than that I will stay away from the World Series.
Big play is on Virginia Tech -3.0 (which will be the main part of the liveblog) and a smaller play on New Mexico -7.0, which I will examine in spots.
–Figures the moment I tune into this game, the Hokies run into the punter for a first down. This where Matt Ryan will rink and dink his way to the end zone after starting off the game 1 for 6.
–Raining in Blacksburg? Could be a slopfest.
–Boston College still can’t get another 20 yards. They punt it right inside the 1.
–5 yard quarterback sneak. That’s about as exciting as the ACC will get.
–These offensive stats are atrocious. How the hell are the Hokies ranked #8 in the BCS?
–Punting wars! Maybe the World Series will be more exciting to watch tonight.
**Action play on the Rockies +189. Not really sure why, I guess I just like losing.
–Boston College’s offense has looked turgid so far. Is this the fifth punt of the game?
–I like how Doug Flutie passed on this broadcast. It would have been Dan Fouts in Oregon all over again. Gotta love Flutie.
–Virginia Tech slowly moving the ball, up to the 30 now. At this rate they’ll be in the end zone by the third quarter.
–The “top running defense” of the Eagles has been pushed around a lot tonight. Beating UMass just doesn’t seem to establish your street cred. Virginia Tech driving deep.
–Nice unsportsmanlike on one of the rare run stuffs by BC. Everything evens out.
**Over/under on bloody sock mentions: 350.
**Ball barely grazes Tavarez, but it allows for the advance.
–Wow, that wasn’t a catch…but still, the refs might be incompetent enough to keep it stand…
–…and they don’t. Touchdown Tech, 7-0.
**What the hell just happened in the Red Sox game? An infield double? That leads to a groundout that scores, 1-0 Rockies.
–The rare touchdown cannot stop the puntfest! BC has called 20 plays for 36 yards.
**Jimenez goes 1-2-3.
–It’s getting wet out there, and it’s the perfect time for the Eagles to start generating offense. This is going to end very badly.
**Schilling not looking sharp at all…breaking ball going way high. Of course, Torrealba prevents heavy damage by hitting a double play ball.
–One thing Matt Ryan will have to learn before Mel Kiper anoints him the #1 pick is to throw the ball away. Another punt. A battle between two top ten teams and it’s 7-0 approaching halftime. Only in the ACC.
**Unbelievable. A turnover on the first play inside their own 20? Eagles have been stopped all half and they can tie the game with one good throw.
–Great little run on 3rd and 10 that picks up the first down, but a procedural penalty negates it. Ryan resorts to throwing it high to another one.
–Wet field means going for it on 4th down. This offensive line sucks–rush 3, they ALL penetrate, and they force him to throw it away?
–An awful running offense breaks out for 34 on the next play from scrimmage.
–Unbelievable block in the back that will certainly push Virginia Tech out of scoring position before halftime. Mental errors everywhere for the Hokies.
(Halftime, 7-0 Tech)
**Jimenez has set down 6 of 7, the only one on base so far thanks to a hit by pitch. We shall see if this means anything when he goes through the lineup the second time.
**Looks like a pitcher’s duel, with Schilling throwing strikes again.
**Jimenez has 2 out and walks Pedroia and Youuks to bring up Big Papi. Looks like we have a disaster unfolding, because Ubaldo can’t find the strike zone anymore.
**Ortiz misses a home run on the Pesky Pole by ten feet. He then can’t hold up on a ball in and strikes out. Those are moments that can turn around series. Usually.
**Popups fucking everywhere. Show some patience Colorado. Schilling’s through 4.
–Man, did they revert the rule to “body touching the ground, then it’s a catch?” Virginia Tech has grabbed a TD and an INT. Naturally, they can do nothing with the latter, yet another punt.
–I wonder if you could bet there would be more punts than points in this game. I’d have put the odds at even, because it’s the ACC.
–Virginia Tech gets their third drive inside the ten.
**You did not just start comparing Jimenez to the great Valenzuela. Naturally he walks Lowell and gives up another hit to J.D. Drew. He’s not going to last five.
**Varitek’s sac fly ties the game. Oh well, fun while it lasted…
**Another walk to Ellsbury. Ugh. I sense a seven run inning brewing if he doesn’t get out Lugo.
**Lugo two inches away from a schnide-breaking, bases-clearing double. My Lord.
**Free motherfucking Taco! Thank you Jacoby Ellsbury. This is followed by the worst curveball in the world that someone hits no one and ends up in Torrealba’s glove.
**If he walks Lugo, I might as well switch off the TV. But he grounds out a tapper. 1-1 after four.
##New Mexico and Air Force in a dogfight. Looks like a lost cause.
–Punt, punt. I’ll let you guess what game this is.
–Wow, a downfield throw! This could be enshrined in the ACC highlight reel–Sean Glennon can throw it deep. Underthrown catch, but deep.
**This is good ol’ NL baseball
–Glennon now thinks he can throw deep all the time, and now gets bailed out by the refs with an iffy PI call that negates the BC INT.
**Tied at 1 halfway. Schilling’s clearly unhittable right now. Here’s praying that somehow Eric Gagne gets the ball in this game (not likely with Okajima and Papelbon looming).
##Air Force 21, New Mexico 10. Just a lost cause.
–Crucial field goal makes it 10-0.
**Jimenez keeps on falling behind. Balls inside, balls way outside, balls in the strike zone. Hmm…
–This offensive line sucks.
–But Virginia Tech’s special team fucking SUCKS. A personal foul on 4th and 33? My God. That was ticky-tacky (he was clearly trying to back him up) Why are you even trying for the punt block.
–If everyone wasn’t so enamored with Matt Ryan, you probably would see more running game ion this wet field. Virginia Tech’s clearly playing pass. Although it might just be that their running sucks, but I really think you run more. Only 12 real rushing attempts for 52 yards? Another punt coming.
**Manny with a single. The inning of doom looms.
**Lowell with a ripped double, 2-1 Red Sox. Jimenez chased. Man…
**This is the perfect time for a J.D. Drew strikeout. This is NOT the perfect time to raise the count to 3 and 1.
**Bases loaded. The end is coming right here. Another pitcher chased.
–When I say run, I don’t mean run on 1st and 10 up the middle…
##21-13, followed by an immediate fumbled kickoff return by Air Force. This is back in play. 21-21.
**Someone needs to strike out here. A 2-1 loss is fine. A grand slam would be crap.
–3rd and 11 after another BC penalty.
**Out. Fine.
–Ryan’s been high on his receivers all game long. Hasn’t he learned how to step in?
–Boston College’s top running D is getting hammered in half by Virginia Tech’s hideous run game. Naturally, Tech can’t resist dealing with the devil and passing.
**Holliday continuing to hit. Man on.
**The blatant product placement of Fox is sickening. Tim McCarver of course upgrades it to nauseating: “From schilling to Schilling”–HAHAHAHA!
–Here comes the punt team again, and BC’s chance to tease the cover.
**Schilling a walk to put two on, it looks like Okajima’s time.
–Ryan gets picked off. The curse of #2 continues.
**Okajima deals out #2 with the runners moving into scoring position. Possibly the last good chance for the Rockies before 2 innings of Papelbon loom.
**Strikeout to end it.
–Still plenty of time to break the cover though; Ryan unleashes two bullets for about 45 yards. I swear Tech’s going to have to pick this ball off at least two more times.
–Unbelievable, Virginia Tech has controlled this game for 55 minutes and they’re going to blow a 10 point lead. Step up Hokies…
–No. God no.
**Ellsbury with a double?
–Well, now I have to hope for a garbage score from Tech. Either that or OT.
–You have got to be fucking kidding. FALL ON THAT BALL.
–Well…at least one scenario is still in play.
–I’m not sure what to hope for. Field goal? INT for a TD? 4 and out?
–This is unbelievable. If BC wins this game and stays at #2, it’ll be massive garbage.
–No. No. No no no no no. Where the hell did Ryan’s mobility just come from? Where the hell is the pass rush? What the fuck?
–Thank God for holding. It’s a beautiful penalty.
–I hate everyone and everything. I want Chestnut Hill to burn alive and Matt Ryan to develop osteoporosis.
–I just realized I jinxed myself twenty minutes ago. Fucking shoot me.
–Boston College is going to the national championship game. I hate Boston. I don’t even care if I win the rest of the plays today.
**Which I won’t, because Colorado can’t hit anymore. Utterly depressing.
I’m still recovering from that Boston College fiasco. I need some air, give me a bit.
##31-28 Air Force. On the bright side, they can stop no one.
**The Rockies just look like they’re ready to head back on their plane to Denver. How many in Colorado have been caught looking in this series?
##Air Force ties the game. Still looking at a 1-4 night.
**Okajima strikes out another one, paving the way for Papelbon. Outs running low for the Rox.
##Air Force fumbles the ball. Some life left in this one, could change an utterly shitty night into a slightly painful one. Actually no. No matter what happens this night sucks.
**Papelbon gives up a single to Holliday and then goes right back to pick him off. What the fuck. Like I said, this night sucks.
##New Mexico can only manage a field goal, 34-31. Yep, 1-4 it is.
**Rockies using up the best of their bullpen before Thursday. I should have just placed everything on the under. Morrron.
##I dunno why I’ve been saying 1-4 with only four plays. 1-3. Still suck-ass with the main play blown in the last two and a half minutes. Crap.
##Well, another fumble makes things interesting in Albuquerque. Bizarre pitch. Actually, why are they pitching on 1st down and 60 yards to go. So confused.
##Yeesh, Air Force cannot tackle for the first down. Perfectly fine on 2nd and long.
**Papelbon strikes out Helton. Two more to go.
##Only a TD helps me here from Air Force. Would help minimize a terrible night.
##New Mexico isn’t going for the kill. Ugh. This will be a loss.
**Two out.
##One last chance for New Mexico to stick it. Failure. Failures. All of them.
##Missed field goal. Utterly worthless either way. Hoping for a return for a TD is all that’s left.
**Red Sox up 2-0 in this series. Christ. A 2-1 win never felt so dominating. 1 win, 1 loss here, so I think I win nothing.
##Air Force fumbles again. Wow. Painful loss for them. Looks like a painful loss for me.
##Yep, this will be the game here on 4th and 1. Pretty much the last chance, better hope for garbage.
##Nope. 1-3 today. Shitty, shitty night. Until later. Perhaps much later (1-5, -a billion units).
